A GST invoice format for interior design services

A GST invoice format for interior design services shows your name, address and GSTIN, a unique invoice number and date, the client's details and GSTIN if registered, a description with the SAC or HSN code, the taxable value, and CGST plus SGST for an intra-state supply or IGST for an inter-state one. Use the template below and confirm codes and rates with your CA.

The tax invoice template

Sample intra-state invoice, so CGST and SGST apply and IGST is blank. For a client in another state, use IGST instead. Codes and rates are left for your CA to confirm.

What every tax invoice must show

Under the GST invoice rules, a tax invoice carries a fixed set of details. The header and footer of your format should hold them so nobody forgets one.

When to raise which invoice

A design stage invoice bills a design fee milestone, such as concept approval or working drawings. It is usually services only, so it is simple.

Execution invoices are harder. When you supply and fix woodwork, ceilings and fittings, the tax treatment can differ from a design fee. It may be a works contract, or a supply of goods with installation, depending on how the job is structured. Ask your CA how your contracts should be invoiced before your first big project, not after.

A final bill closes the project. It lists the contract value, approved change orders, all invoices raised, payments received, any retention held, and the balance due.

Sample layout. The tax lines follow whatever treatment your CA confirms for the project.

Common mistakes

Making the format in Excel or Google Sheets

  1. Put your firm details and GSTIN in a fixed header. Add cells for invoice number, date, client, client GSTIN and place of supply.
  2. Add a cell for your state. Use an IF formula: if the place of supply equals your state, fill CGST and SGST at half the rate each; otherwise fill IGST.
  3. Keep the GST rate in one cell, entered as your CA advises, so it is never typed into formulas.
  4. Add an amount-in-words line and a signature block, then export to PDF.
  5. Keep an invoice register tab with number, date, client, taxable value and tax, for your CA.

GST invoices in the D&B Operating System

The D&B Operating System raises milestone invoices with GST that match the payment schedule in the agreement, then tracks payments, reminders and receipts. Accounts can export the data for your accountant. It is software by BRANDSWOT Consultancy, a branding and growth consultancy, in early access with pricing on request.

Questions people ask

What is the correct GST invoice format for interior design services?

It must show your name, address and GSTIN, a unique consecutive invoice number and date, the client's name, address and GSTIN if registered, place of supply, a description with SAC or HSN code, taxable value, and the tax rate and amount as CGST plus SGST or IGST. Add a signature. Confirm codes and rates with your CA.

What is the GST rate on interior design services?

GST on most professional and design services in India is 18%, and a pure design fee usually falls in this group. Execution work where you also supply materials can be treated differently. Confirm the rate for each type of contract with your CA, since it depends on how the work is structured.

What is an interior design invoice format if I am not GST-registered?

If you are not registered, you cannot charge GST or issue a tax invoice. Use a simple invoice or bill of supply format as your CA advises, with your details, an invoice number, date, client details, description and amount. Check with your CA when your turnover means you must register.

What should a design stage invoice format include?

Show the project and quote reference, the design stage being billed, such as concept or working drawings, the agreed fee for that stage, GST, and the total. Mention what was delivered at that stage. This links each invoice to an approval the client has already given.

What goes in a final bill format for an interior project?

List the original contract value, approved change orders, the revised value, invoices already raised, payments received, retention held if any, and the final balance with GST. Attach the handover certificate or closed snag list so the client can see the work is complete. Ask your CA to check the tax lines on the final bill.
